Mitra Jyothi pays special attention to empowering visually impaired (VI) girls through learning. This organization supports higher education of visually impaired girls from remote villages and poor socio-economic backgrounds. Mitra Jyothi identifies VI girls who have completed grade 10 with good academic results and enrolls them in institutes in Bangalore for higher education. Through this program, poor VI girls get access to good education and thus enables them to work.
Higher education options (after SSLC) are comparatively less in small towns and for children with special needs, accessibility is even less. Compared to boys, visually impaired girls have very few opportunities to explore higher education options due to various social issues. Also, for the economically disadvantaged parents of these girls, it is not affordable for them to send their children to cities where there are more higher education options.
Mitra Jyothi supports higher education for visually impaired students by covering the cost of college fees, books and other assistance for the student along with residential support. Educational support, along with food and accommodation services, helps many visually impaired girls from remote and rural areas to access higher education. Otherwise, it would have been very difficult or impossible for them to stay in a city like Bangalore to continue their studies
